Abstract

Drone technology has evolved from remotely operated platforms into intelligent, connected, and increasingly autonomous systems supporting civilian, industrial, environmental, and humanitarian applications. This review examines recent advances, applications, challenges, and future research directions in drone technology. Key developments include artificial intelligence–enabled navigation, computer vision, obstacle avoidance, adaptive path planning, and autonomous decision-making. Drone swarms and multi-agent systems are also discussed, with emphasis on formation control, cooperative sensing, distributed task allocation, trajectory optimization, and reliable inter-drone communication. Edge AI and cloud–edge computing enable lightweight onboard processing, low-latency detection, real-time analytics, and scalable Drone-as-a-Service platforms. Major applications include precision agriculture, emergency response, wildfire monitoring, search and rescue, medical delivery, logistics, environmental monitoring, pollution detection, and biodiversity conservation. The review further highlights the role of 5G and future 6G networks in supporting high-speed communication, satellite connectivity, unmanned traffic management, and the Internet of Drones. However, deployment remains limited by endurance, payload capacity, computational requirements, communication instability, cybersecurity, privacy, regulations, and public acceptance. Future research should prioritize energy-efficient intelligence, secure cooperative autonomy, resilient communication, explainable AI, standardized traffic management, privacy-preserving analytics, and ethical governance.
